2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Change Comes After Poor Reception
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a more defined game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the full text from the president's communication:
Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a clearer vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You took the criticism to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half producing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming Ben soon. We are all eager to persist seeing the evolution of the game in the weeks to come.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Details and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Then, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Take on the rivals with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that change every match. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your squad can secure victory? The choice is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an official debut schedule or platforms, but players can expect additional details as production advances.
